Kwale County distributes certified maize seeds to 200 Mwereni farmers

At least 200 farmers from Mwereni ward in Kwale County have benefited from certified maize seeds from the county in preparation for the rainy season, to boost agricultural production and enhance livelihoods.

Speaking on Thursday after receiving the seeds, Ali Kuwania, a farmer, said he is hopeful of getting a high-quality yield this year.
"With these seeds, I am positive about getting a good yield. I had set aside seeds from my previous harvest, but they were not enough, and even the quality is not good," he said when he received 4kgs of the certified maize seeds.
Another farmer, Mebakari Mwanyiro, asked the county government to provide fertilizers as well.
"We are grateful for these seeds, but we hope the government will give us fertilizers and pesticides as well," she said.

Speaking during the commissioning of the construction of the Mwangulu Abattoir at Mwereni, Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani said their development agenda is focused on solving the socio-economic challenges that faced Kwale County in the past, such as poor infrastructure and a lack of business opportunities for the people.
She also issued 150 hybrid Galla goats to the Kilimo Bora Group and distributed certified maize seeds to at least 200 farmers in the Ward.
"We remain committed to ensuring that the county's agricultural productivity is enhanced through sustainable and climate-smart agricultural practices," she said.
